One of the most iconic American coin designs of the 20th century was created by James Earle Fraser. In 1913, Fraser paid tribute to indigenous cultures in the United States by designing one of the first coin designs for American currency. This historic design now makes its debut in the United Snakes of America Series, a collection of silver rounds that sheds light on the decay and deceit of the federal government. You can now add the 1 oz Indian Skull Silver Rounds to your collection by shopping at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Available in plastic flips, acrylic tubes of 20 rounds, or boxes of 500 rounds!
  • The first design in the United Snakes of America Series!
  • Showcases a deteriorated view of the Buffalo Nickel indigenous figure!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • The obverse features a skeletal figure in right-profile relief.
  • The reverse includes a captivating twist on the US heraldic eagle.

All 1 oz Indian Skull Silver Rounds available at BGASC are newly minted and come in a variety of packaging options. You can choose to have them individually housed in plastic flips, in acrylic tubes containing 20 rounds, or in boxes of 500 rounds.

Obverse

The obverse side of the Indian Skull Silver Round showcases a decaying image of an indigenous leader in right-profile relief. Based on Fraser’s original bust, this design preserves the intricate details of the hair and feathers, while revealing the skeletal remains.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1 oz Indian Skull Silver Rounds in the United Snakes of America Series, you’ll discover the series collection. The design features the US national shield at the center, with a larger snake rising from its core and multiple snake heads. This unique twist on the American bald eagle, which is traditionally depicted, conveys a sense of intrigue and symbolism in alignment with the series’ theme.

History

Approved by President Taft’s administration in early 1913, Fraser’s design is fitting for this series as Taft’s presidency was marked by various scandals. One example was the Ballinger-Pinchot controversy. The Ballinger-Pinchot controversy was a significant conflict within Taft’s administration involving Richard A. Ballinger, the Secretary of the Interior, and Gifford Pinchot, the head of the U.S. Forest Service. Pinchot accused Ballinger of favoring corporate interests over conservation efforts in the handling of public lands. The controversy stemmed from Ballinger’s decision to open up public lands for private development, which Pinchot believed violated conservation principles.
