{{/presale}}Known as “Old Ironsides,” the USS Constitution is a timeless symbol of American naval strength. Launched in 1797, she was one of the original six frigates ordered by the Naval Act of 1794 and is now the worlds oldest commissioned warship still afloat. Her nickname originated during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs seemed to bounce off her sturdy oak sides, prompting sailors to say her hull was as tough as iron. Right now, 1 oz U.S.S. Constitution Ship Silver Rounds are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1 oz U.S.S. Constitution Ship Silver Round offered here ships in a plastic flip to ensure its protection and proudly celebrates a notable part of Americas founding. The round includes text from Article 1, Section 10 of the United States Constitution and features the U.S.S. Constitution in its design, paying tribute to the early U.S. Navy. These rounds were minted by Liberty Mint and Constitution Mint, two mints based in Provo, Utah, during the 1970s and 1980s.
Obverse
On the obverse side of each U.S.S. Constitution Ship Silver Round, youll find Old Ironsides at full sail. Today, the USS Constitution is a museum ship in Boston Harbor, cared for by active U.S. Navy sailors. She is regularly restored to preserve her historical design, with the last major restoration completed in 2017. The ship can still sail under her own power and does so on occasion, showcasing her lasting craftsmanship.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1 oz Constitution Ship Silver Round, youll find text from Article 1, Section 10 of the Constitution. It reads, NO STATE SHALLMAKE ANYTHING BUT GOLD AND SILVER COIN A TENDER IN PAYMENT OF DEBT. Identifying hallmarks are also included here.
History
The Constitutions construction was innovative, with a unique mix of heavy weaponry and agility, making her effective in combat. Her best-known victories came during the War of 1812 when she defeated five British warships, including HMS Guerriere and HMS Java. These wins boosted American morale and established the U.S. Navys presence on the seas.
