{{/presale}}The $5 Gold Half Eagle Coin, introduced by the United States Mint in 1795, is now available for purchase online from BGASC. This remarkable coin, minted until 1929, has undergone five design iterations. One of the most captivating designs in the series is the Classic Head bust of Liberty, used between 1834 and 1838. Notably, the Classic Head possesses the lowest gold content in the history of this series.

Each of the 1836 $5 Classic Head Gold Half Eagle Coins available at BGASC is in AU53 condition, certified by the NGC. These coins exhibit medium to near-full mint luster, with light wear and friction on the higher relief points of the design strike.
Obverse
On the obverse, the 1836 $5 Gold Half Eagle showcases a beautiful bust of Lady Liberty, sculpted by William Kneass. Mr. Kneass, the 2nd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, created this left-profile bust with Liberty adorned in long, curly hair and a Liberty sash around her head.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1836 Classic Head Gold Half Eagle features an enchanting depiction of the heraldic eagle. In this early version, the eagle is presented in front-facing relief, accompanied by the US national shield, the arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace.
History
The 1836 Classic Head Half Eagle represents the final gold coin in this series to be struck with a reduced gold content. By 1834, it was discovered that the gold content of the $5 Gold Eagle exceeded its face value. Consequently, the gold content of US Eagles was reduced from 22-karat gold (91.67%) to 89.92% gold. In 1837, the gold content was slightly increased to 90%, making the 1836 Classic Head a remarkable coin with its unique gold composition.
