{{/presale}}Introducing the Liberty Gold Half Eagle from the United States Mint! This iconic design, created by Christian Gobrecht, was in production from 1839 to 1908. But what makes our 1844-O $5 Liberty Half Eagle truly special is its fascinating history. These coins, over 150 years old, were originally issued by the New Orleans Mint, which is no longer in operation. They spent decades in international banks before finally making their way back to the US in the late 2010s, becoming part of the renowned Fairmont Collection. Now, you have the opportunity to own a piece of history with our certified 1844-O Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins, available for purchase online from BGASC.
Highlights:
Our 1844-O Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available in XF45 condition, representing the highest grade on the XF scale. These coins exhibit minimal wear on the highest points, retaining some traces of mint luster, making them a valuable addition to any collection.
Obverse
The captivating obverse of the 1844-O Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin showcases Liberty’s left-profile bust, adorned with a coronet crown.
Reverse
The reverse features the heraldic eagle, a powerful symbol of American pride. Notably, this design lacks the national motto above the eagle’s head, a feature that would be added to the coins after 1866.
History
The term “Fairmont Collection” refers to a distinguished group of US Gold Eagles that played a vital role in international trade. Many of these coins spent years in foreign banks before making their way back to the US, becoming a cherished part of numismatic history.
Back in 1835, the United States Mint underwent a significant expansion, resulting in the establishment of three branches, including the New Orleans Mint, which focused on gold and silver coining. By the 1840s, all three mints, including Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans, were producing $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles, with New Orleans being the most prolific, minting a total of 364,600 coins in 1844.
