Each of these 1856-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins is available for purchase in About Uncirculated 58 condition. AU58 coins boast only minor signs of friction at the highest relief points, along with medium to near-full mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1856 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a left-profile bust of Liberty, a design created by James B. Longacre and inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 design. Liberty’s head is portrayed in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1856-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you’ll find a striking depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design showcases a more intricate version of the seal, based on the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle’s head is accompanied by rays of light extending from wingtip to wingtip, and a larger US national shield graces its chest.
History
These $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles hold a unique history as Fairmont Collection coins. Originally used in international commerce between the United States and other nations, they found their way into foreign bank vaults for several decades before being rediscovered and repatriated to the US in the late 2010s.
