All 1857 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles are in AU50 condition and securely housed in protective plastic slabs. AU50 coins are slightly above the Extremely Fine designation and exhibit extremely light friction on the highest points of the coin, with medium to near-full mint luster possible.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1857 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Half Eagles features the renowned Liberty Head design, crafted by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty is depicted in a left-profile bust, adorned with a coronet crown.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1857 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin, you’ll find a heraldic eagle with a smaller US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace.
History
The wreck of the S.S. Central America in 1857 had a significant impact on the US economy. Although these 1857 Liberty Gold Half Eagles were not aboard the ship, the date will forever be associated with that historical event. These particular 1857 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles were part of the Fairmont Collection, a distinguished group of US Eagle and Half Eagle gold coins from the 19th and 20th centuries. Recently repatriated to the United States in the 2010s after their discovery in European banks, these coins were once involved in international commerce between America and European nations.
