Obverse
The obverse of the 1861 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins showcases a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet crown and adorned with flowing curls. The design is encircled by 13 stars, and the date mark 1861 is placed at the bottom.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1861 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins, you’ll find the Great Seal of the United States. This remarkable rendition of the heraldic eagle features a frontal view of a majestic bald eagle supporting a detailed US national shield. Rays of sunlight extend from the tips of its outstretched wings, while the eagle firmly holds the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
History
The story of the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin can be traced back to the famous California Gold Rush. When the US Mint introduced the Eagle denomination in 1795, it was initially available only in the form of the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle. Following the immense influx of gold to the Treasury during and after the California Gold Rush, the $20 Gold Double Eagle was born. The coin featured a design inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design from 1838, adapted by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

Most BGASC orders are shipped within one (1) business day of your payment clearing. Payments made via PayPal clear instantly. Bitcoin payments clear instantly once the transaction is confirmed. Credit Card and bank wire payments process within 1 business day. ACH and paper check payments take 3-5 business days. All orders of $199 or more that are eligible for free shipping are, by default, shipped via a carrier of our choice (USPS or UPS). Depending on the contents and size of your purchase, you may be able to upgrade to a specific carrier during checkout.
