Hunter, a prominent figure who served as a U.S. Representative from Virginia and later as the Confederate States Secretary of State and a Confederate Senator.

History

At the onset of the Civil War, the Confederate States of America started issuing notes and coins. The first series of Confederate Notes was authorized by the Confederate Congress on March 9, 1861. These paper notes were predominantly produced in Richmond, Virginia, or Columbia, South Carolina, throughout the war. By the time these notes were issued in 1864, the Confederate States produced the notes as promissory notes only. The value was payable to the bearer within two years of a peace treaty being signed by the United States of America and the Confederate States of America.
