{{/presale}}During the 1860s, the San Francisco Mint became vital in the production of American gold coins. Prior to the US Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint and New Orleans Mint played significant roles in producing Liberty Double Eagle gold coins and other denominations. Throughout the Civil War and Reconstruction, the majority of production shifted to the San Francisco Mint. Right now, 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at BGASC.
Highlights:
These 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are in AU55 condition. This grade falls near the high end of the About Uncirculated range. You can expect medium to near-full luster with very light signs of wear at the highest points.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1867-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin displays a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, this left-profile relief illustrates Liberty wearing a coronet crown, with a ring of 13 stars surrounding her bust. The date mark is found at the bottom of the coin.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1867-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagles is a representation of the Great Seal of the United States. This design features a front-facing bald eagle, showcasing the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. Above the eagles head is a ring of 13 stars. These coins are classified as Type II specimens, referring to the second version of the reverse design.
History
From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint produced Liberty Double Eagles without the national motto on the reverse. In late 1866, however, the Mint introduced the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” within the ring of stars above the eagles head. Type II specimens were minted from 1866 to 1876, before the Type III design was introduced, which lasted until 1907. While Type III coins kept the motto, they changed the denomination inscription from “Twenty D” to “Twenty Dollars.”
