In 1850, the United States Mint introduced the Gold Double Eagle coin. This was the fourth denomination to be added to a series that already featured the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle coins. While most denominations in the 19th century shared similar designs, the Double Eagle had distinct features. Today, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles with an Open 3 are available at BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Comes with an NGC plastic slab!
  • 24th issue of Liberty Double Eagles!
  • Open 3 coins!
  • Limited number of certified coins!
  • Contains .9675 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $20 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Graded About Uncirculated 50 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • On the obverse is Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States.
  • Struck by the Philadelphia Mint.

All 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles available here are in AU50 condition. This grade means the coins have only slight signs of wear on the highest points. Many coins still retain medium to full original mint luster. The Open 3 designation refers to the larger opening in the numeral 3 in the 1873 date.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle shows a portrait of Lady Liberty designed by James B. Longacre. This design, inspired by Christian Gobrechts earlier work, features Liberty in a left-profile bust with a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1873 Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coin features an ornate version of the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle is shown with the US national shield, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The national motto is within a ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head.

History

The US Mint first issued the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle coins in 1794 and 1795. These coins were valued at $10, $5, and $2.50 respectively. The Double Eagle, a $20 coin, was introduced in 1850 and is the largest denomination coin ever circulated by the US Mint.
