These coins have been graded XF40 by the Professional Coin Grading Service, indicating that about 90% of the original details remain intact, though high points are worn flat and there is little to no luster left.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, designed by James B. Longacre, features Lady Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown. The year 1873, with its distinctive closed 3, is inscribed at the bottom. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1873.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin showcases a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its chest. Surrounding the eagle are identifying marks, including the In God We Trust motto, which was added to the series in 1866. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TWENTY D.
History
Minted from 1850 to 1907, the Liberty Gold Double Eagles experienced three different reverse design variations. The original design was used from 1850 to 1866, followed by the addition of the In God We Trust motto in 1866. Starting in 1877, the US Mint spelled out the word dollars on the coins. These coins were produced at five different US Mint locations: Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
