{{/presale}}The $20 Double Eagle was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1850 and continued to be produced until 1933. During its minting years, two distinct design series were created, with the Liberty Double Eagle being the first and longest-running. Right now, you can find 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available at BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin comes in Mint State 61 condition. Coins with this grade will show a reduced mint luster, along with a few heavy or numerous light contact marks in the main focal areas, as well as noticeable hairlines. We cannot guarantee a specific grading service label with any coin; we only assure that each coin matches the stated date, design, and grade details provided.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1877-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you will find a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Designed for the mint by James B. Longacre in 1849, this portrait shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown, encircled by a ring of 13 stars. The year of issue appears at the bottom.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coin displays the Type III design element. This design features the bald eagle in front-facing relief, adorned with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch symbolizing peace. The design also includes a ring of 13 stars along with the national motto.
History
The 1877 issue was significant as it marked the introduction of the Type III reverse design. From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint featured the Type I reverse, showcasing only the Great Seal surrounded by 13 stars. This was followed by the Type II design from 1866 to 1876, which included the national motto. In 1877, the Type III reverse was introduced, featuring a modification of the face value inscription from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
