Obverse

On the obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, there is a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle features the Great Seal of the United States. This 1877 release was the first to use the Type III reverse design, which includes the denomination engraved as TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D.

History

The United States Mint went through three design iterations for the reverse of the Liberty Double Eagle. The Type I design, the original, was used for 17 years and featured the engraving TWENTY D. for the denomination. In 1866, the design was modified to include IN GOD WE TRUST within the circle of 13 stars over the head of the eagle. The final design, the Type III, was used from 1877 to 1907 and altered the denomination to feature as it does on these coins.
