Obverse
The obverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin features James B. Longacres depiction of Lady Liberty. Shown in left-profile relief in a Greco-Roman style, Lady Liberty wears a coronet crown. The design is surrounded by 13 stars with the year of issue at the bottom. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin showcases James B. Longacres heraldic eagle design. The eagle is shown facing left with a shield on its chest, surrounded by the coin’s identifying marks. Inscriptions include TWENTY DOLLARS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
The reverse design of this coin underwent three changes over its production period. The Type I reverse was used from 1850 to 1865. Starting in 1866, the motto “In God We Trust” was added. By 1877, the third and final reverse debuted, fully spelling out the coin’s denomination.
