History
The Double Eagle series, a cornerstone of American coinage, spanned from 1849 to 1933. This Liberty design, masterfully crafted by James B. Longacre, adorned these magnificent coins from their inception until 1907. The design’s impressive run concluded when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a refresh of American coinage, ushering in the renowned Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Interestingly, the Double Eagle series underwent three distinct design iterations for both the Liberty and the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle throughout its production.
