Each 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin at BGASC is thoughtfully housed in protective plastic flips. In Extremely-Fine condition, these coins exhibit light wear on the design’s high points, with some revealing traces of the original mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin boasts a left-profile bust of Liberty, a creation by James B. Longacre in 1849. Liberty is adorned with a coronet crown and surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.
Reverse
Flip the coin to reveal Longacre’s rendition of the heraldic eagle on the reverse side, known as the Great Seal of the United States. This intricate portrayal showcases the eagle with the national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. A ring of 13 stars graces the eagle’s head. Classified as a Type III issue, this coin features the national motto (added in 1866) and a face value noted as TWENTY DOLLARS (changed in 1877).
