Obverse

On the obverse of the 1879-S Morgan Dollar, Lady Liberty is shown in a left-profile relief, as designed by George Morgan in 1878. She is wearing a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath, with 13 stars surrounding her.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar shows a heraldic eagle in front-facing relief. The eagle has its wings spread wide and holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons, flanked by an oak and laurel wreath.

History

The 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar was only the second year of production for this celebrated coin. The coins that year were struck at several mints, including Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco. San Francisco minted the second-largest number of these coins, with a total of 9,110,000 produced.
