The Morgan Silver Dollar, crafted by George T. Morgan, made its first appearance in 1878 at the United States Mint, with annual minting continuing until 1904. Obverse

The obverse side of the 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar features Lady Liberty in a striking left-profile relief. Anna Willes Williams was reportedly the model for Libertys image. She is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Surrounding her figure is a ring of 13 stars, symbolizing the original states.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coin is the heraldic eagle. In this design, the eagle is depicted without a national shield. It is shown facing forward with its wings fully spread. The eagle’s talons hold both the arrows of war and an olive branch, which signifies peace.

History

In 1883, there were four circulation versions of Morgan Dollars issued, along with a limited number of proof coins from the Philadelphia Mint. The New Orleans Mint struck a total of 8.725 million coins in 1883, making it the second highest mintage behind Philadelphia’s 12.29 million coins. Additionally, the San Francisco Mint produced 6.25 million coins and the Carson City Mint issued 1.2 million coins.
