This coin holds the distinction of being the largest gold denomination ever struck by the United States Mint. The Double Eagle was minted from 1850 until 1907, featuring the iconic Liberty Head design by James B. Longacre. These 1883-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are graded as Extremely Fine specimens. Coins in this condition typically rank between 40 to 45 on the Sheldon scale, showing light wear on the high points while still retaining some mint luster.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1883-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design, created by James B. Longacre, showcases Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a coronet and surrounded by a circle of 13 stars. The date of issue is located at the bottom of the design.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1883 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins features the Great Seal of the United States. This design, also by Longacre, includes a bald eagle, the national shield, arrows symbolizing military strength, and an olive branch representing peace. As a Type III coin, it fully spells out the denomination as TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
In 1883, production soared, with the Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints all contributing to the Liberty Double Eagles. The San Francisco Mint produced a total of 1.189 million coins, edging out Philadelphia, which minted 1.125 million coins. The Carson City Mint added 59,962 coins to the total.
