The Morgan Silver Dollar, created by George T. Morgan, made its first appearance in 1878 and was produced each year until 1904, with a final minting in 1921. This iconic dollar was in circulation during key moments of U.S. history, such as the Gilded Age and the early 20th century. Right now, 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available at BGASC.

Each 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and comes with a protective plastic flip. For orders of 20 coins or more, they will be packaged in tubes. Made from 90% silver and 10% copper, these coins are valued for both their historical significance and their precious metal content.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1885 Morgan Dollar, you will see Lady Liberty in a left-facing profile. The model for this image is believed to be Anna Willes Williams. Lady Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and coronet, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar features the image of a heraldic eagle. Morgans design showcases the eagle without the traditional national shield. Instead, the eagle is depicted with its wings spread, holding both arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both conflict and peace.

History

The 1885 Morgan Dollar stands out with one of the highest mintages in the series. Coins were produced at various U.S. Mint facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. The Philadelphia Mint struck the most, with over 17.78 million coins produced, nearly double the next largest mintage.
