Obverse

For the obverse of this 1885 Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is found in a portrait. This neoclassical design depicts Liberty facing left with wavy hair, a crown of wheat, and a Phrygian cap. The coins year of issue and an inscription reading E Pluribus Unum also features on the obverse.

Reverse

For the reverse of Morgan Silver Dollar Coins an American eagle is depicted. As it carries arrows and an olive branch in its talons, this majestic bird opens its wings and faces toward the left. Inscriptions appear on the reverse as well reading United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.

History

The United States Mint struck the Morgan Silver Dollar initially between 1878-1904. When silver from the Sherman Silver Purchase Act dried up, the production of the coin ceased for nearly two decades. The coin then returned briefly in 1921 before being replaced by the Peace Dollar.
