Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1886-S Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin, you’ll find the elegant left-profile bust of Liberty. Created in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, this design showcases Liberty wearing a coronet crown with 13 stars surrounding the field.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1886-S $5 Liberty Half Eagles features a captivating depiction of the heraldic eagle. This design showcases the majestic bald eagle holding the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. A banner above its head bears the national motto.
History
The production of Liberty Gold Half Eagles spanned nearly 70 years of American history from 1839 to 1908. Before the Civil War, these coins were struck by various branches of the US Mint, including Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, and San Francisco. After the Civil War, production was primarily carried out by the Philadelphia and San Francisco branches. By the mid-1880s, the San Francisco Mint was at the forefront, producing Liberty Gold Half Eagles at a rate ten times higher than the Philadelphia Mint for the year 1886.
