These iconic coins, designed and named after George T. Morgan, hold a special place in the world of silver currency. Struck as the first standard silver dollar since the Coinage Act of 1873, they have captivated the hearts of numismatists for generations. Now, at BGASC, you can own a certified piece of history – the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin.
Highlights:
Your 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin will arrive securely encased within a PCGS protective plastic slab, preserving its graded condition. Graded at MS65 by the esteemed coin grading service, these coins exhibit high-quality luster and have only minor contact marks, if any. They may display one or two small patches of hairlines.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1887 Morgan Dollar Coin, you’ll find George T. Morgans portrayal of Lady Liberty. This depiction was based on Anna Williams, a Philadelphia school teacher. Liberty graces the coin in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap – a symbol of freedom. Inscriptions include E PLURBIUS UNUM, 1887, and LIBERTY.
Reverse
Turn the 1887 Silver Dollar Coin over, and you’ll discover a captivating heraldic eagle design on the reverse. This front-facing eagle appears poised for flight, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons, symbolizing both peace and strength. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
Morgan Silver Dollars without a mint mark originated from the Philadelphia Mint, which played a significant role in producing over 300 million coins out of the 650 million minted in this iconic series. These coins were minted annually from 1878 to 1904, had a one-year revival in 1921, and returned once more in 2021, marking a rich history of American coinage.
