Obverse

On the obverse, the 1893 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin features the well-known image of Lady Liberty, designed by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty is shown in left-profile with a coronet crown and surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original colonies, with the year “1893” beneath her.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1893 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle depicts the heraldic eagle of the United States. The eagle is shown with the national shield on its chest, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons to symbolize readiness for war and the desire for peace. As part of the Type II design, the national motto In God We Trust is displayed on a banner above the eagle.

History

The Philadelphia Mint produced the bulk of these coins in 1893, with over 1.8 million struck. It was the last year coins were minted at four different mints, with Philadelphia leading production, and Carson City striking the fewest, at just 14,000.
