Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1903 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin, you’ll encounter a captivating depiction of Liberty, masterfully created by James B. Longacre. Liberty graces the coin with a coronet crown, facing left, and is surrounded by 13 stars, symbolizing the original American colonies. Inscriptions include 1903, and LIBERTY.
Reverse
Flipping the 1903 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin to the reverse, you’ll be mesmerized by the image of a heraldic eagle, also crafted by James B. Longacre. This eagle design is a refined adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States, with the eagle gazing to the left, proudly bearing a shield on its chest, and clutching a bundle of arrows, an olive branch, and a double ribbon in its talons. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
Unlike smaller denominations like the quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle, the double eagle didn’t begin production until 1849. Regular issues commenced the following year, showcasing the iconic Liberty head design by James B. Longacre. This timeless design remained in use from 1850 to 1907, and the coin continued in production and circulation until 1933, albeit with a new design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
