In 1909, the United States Mint unveiled the Indian Gold Eagle design from the previous year across four different branch mints, making the year 1909 unique as the only time four mints simultaneously issued these coins. Notably, the San Francisco Mint had one of the lowest mintages, producing just under 300,000 coins during this period. The Fairmont Collection recognizes surviving specimens as prized numismatic pieces. Explore the world of certified 1909-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins now available for purchase at BGASC.

Every 1909-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin offered here is presented in Mint State 62 condition. Coins with this grade showcase overall impaired or dull mint luster, featuring clusters of small contact marks, a few notable marks or nicks, and discernible hairlines. These particular 1909-S Indian Half Eagles are a unique addition to any collection.

Obverse

For the obverse design of the 1909 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin, the US Mint features Bela Lyon Pratts left-profile bust of an indigenous figure. This figure, adorned with a feathered headdress, is struck incuse on the field of the coin, a characteristic it shares with the incuse strike of the eagle on the reverse.

Reverse

On the reverse field of 1909-S $5 Gold Half Eagles, the American bald eagle is captured in left-profile relief. The eagle is portrayed with its wings resting at its side, perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch encircling the sheaf.

History

The number of surviving 1909-S Indian Half Eagles is limited, with each specimen boasting sharply struck designs on both sides and a deep, honey-gold color. Despite the grade, the luster remains robust, displaying a soft, frosted finish.
