Highlights:
All 1916-S $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 60 condition. This grade indicates some diminished mint luster with noticeable contact marks and the possibility of minor damage spots. However, these coins show no signs of circulation wear.
Obverse
The obverse of these coins features a left-profile bust of an indigenous figure adorned with a tribal headdress, a design created by Bela Lyon Pratt in 1908.
Reverse
On the reverse, you’ll find the majestic American bald eagle at rest on a sheaf of arrows, encircled by an olive branch of peace.
History
The 1916 release of $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles holds significance for two main reasons. Firstly, the San Francisco Mint exclusively produced these coins in 1916, with a total production of only 240,000 coins, marking the lowest mintage in the program’s history. Secondly, 1916 was the second-to-last year of issue for this coin, with no production between 1917 and 1928 and a final release in 1929.
