It was the largest denomination in the series and was produced with just two different designs during its history. The final design, introduced in 1907, was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and is widely known as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Reverse
On the reverse of 1925 Pre-33 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins, Saint-Gaudens created an image of the American bald eagle in flight. The eagle is shown soaring above the rising sun, with radiant sunbeams extending across the design.
History
Augustus Saint-Gaudens design on the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is considered a masterpiece of American coinage. His depiction of Lady Liberty in a flowing Grecian gown is both dynamic and detailed, with the fabric appearing to ripple naturally. The coins high-relief design initially posed challenges for the mint, requiring multiple strikes to bring out the full detail and leading to adjustments for easier production.
