Obverse

The obverse of the 1927 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin features a front-facing representation of Liberty. She is depicted walking forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design includes the U.S. Capitol Building in the background, along with rays of light and a ring of 48 stars.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1927 Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins, you will find a magnificent portrayal of the American bald eagle. The eagle is depicted in left-profile relief, soaring through the air as the sun rises from the horizon at the edge of the coin.

History

In 1907, the US Mint modified the design of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle to a lower relief version, making it easier to strike. The motto “In God We Trust” was added to the reverse side, as it was not present in the initial design. This new version of the coin was minted from 1907 to 1933.
