Coin Highlights:
These 1976-S Kennedy Half Dollars are made from 40% genuine silver and will arrive in BU condition. This designation means that only slight flaws could be visible on the surfaces. Also, the packaging for these coins consists of individual plastic flips.
Obverse
For the obverse of 1976-S 40% Silver Half Dollars we find an effigy of JFK. This historic bust debuted in 1964 and is credited to Gilroy Roberts. A classic portrait of American coinage, the design remains in use for the half-dollar coin to this day. Inscriptions on the obverse read In God We Trust, Liberty, 1776-1976.
Reverse
For the reverse of 40% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars, we find a depiction of Independence Hall. Created by Seth Huntington, this commemorative design appeared for only two years during the Bicentennial production of 1975-76. It is accompanied by inscriptions reading United States of America, 200 Years of Freedom, E Pluribus Unum, Half Dollar.
History
The U.S. began planning for its Bicentennial coin program as far back as 1971. By 1973, a contest was in place, allowing artists to re-design the reverse of the Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half-Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. For the Kennedy release, artwork by Seth Huntington featuring Independence Hall was selected. Bicentennial coins were minted between 1975 and 1976, with all coins bearing the dual date of 1776-1976.
