Each 1987 1 oz Engelhard Prospector Silver Round is available to you with a protective plastic flip. These silver rounds had a very limited mintage back in the 1980s, with just 75,000 in total released. The design of these features the popular Eagle Reverse from Engelhard.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1987 1 oz Engelhard Prospector Silver Round features the iconic prospector image. A prospector searches for mineral deposits, and in this design, he is depicted bending over a river, panning for gold. He wears a hat and looks intent on his task. Inscriptions on this side read: U.S.A 1987, and The American Prospector, with a beaded outer circle framing the design.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1987 1 oz Engelhard Prospector Silver Round, there is a detailed depiction of an American Eagle. This reverse design shows the eagle clutching a branch as it flies through the sky with its powerful wings and sharp beak. Inscriptions include: Engelhard, and One Troy Ounce 999+Fine Silver, all enclosed by a beaded rim similar to the obverse.

History

During the late 1970s, as the price of silver approached $50 an ounce, major silver refineries like Handy & Harman, Johnson-Matthey, and Engelhard began creating a variety of silver bullion products. Engelhard made history in 1982 by being the first to market 1-oz silver bullion rounds, showcasing an image of a prospector panning for gold. Though silver isnt typically found in river deposits, these Engelhard silver Prospectors quickly dominated the 1-oz silver round market, surpassing competitors like Johnson-Mattheys Freedom Rounds.
