Obverse
For the obverse design of the 1991 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin, Queen Elizabeth II is featured in right-profile relief. Her Majesty is shown here wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown in a third-generation effigy from Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
Reverse
In the reverse face of 1991 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins, the Royal Canadian Mint features Walter Otts 1979 depiction of the sugar maple leaf. This design was created for the debut of the series and has been used on all weights of the gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins in this series.
History
The 1991 release of the 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf had the lowest mintage to date in the history of the series. Though other dates have subsequently hit lower mintage levels, the 1991 release was the lowest by far at this point in the programs history. The next closest mintage was more than 2.5 times higher.
