Obverse
The 1991-S Proof American Silver Eagle’s obverse showcases Walking Liberty with inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the mint year. Liberty, depicted in a full-length relief in left-profile orientation, walks towards the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1991-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle is the image of the heraldic eagle, a seal modernized in 1986 by John Mercanti. The reverse features the bald eagle with a shield and 13 five-pointed stars, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
History
Since its inception in 1986, the American Silver Eagle coin has prominently featured Adolph Weinman’s iconic design on its obverse. Weinman’s depiction of Liberty, created in 1916, originally graced the US half dollar through 1947.
