{{/presale}}In 1998, the American Gold Eagles from the United States Mint soared in popularity, marking one of the series’ peak mintages. The looming uncertainty of Y2K drove a surge in gold demand in the late ’90s. Now, you can own the second smallest coin in the series, the 1998 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coin, available online at BGASC.
Highlights:
All 1998 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins come with protective flips to preserve the condition of your gold coins. These coins are the second smallest in the overall series and are the 13th release in the overall series.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1998 American Eagle Gold Coin showcases Lady Liberty, originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned this design, replacing the Liberty Head on the $20 Gold Double Eagle. Liberty stands in full relief, holding a torch and olive branch, surrounded by 50 stars representing each state. The inscriptions include only LIBERTY and 1998.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1998 Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin, a depiction of a family of American bald eagles graces the coin. Exclusively designed for the American Gold Eagle Series, it portrays a male eagle in flight carrying a branch while a female eagle tends to hatchlings in a nest. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.
History
During the 1990s, demand for American Gold Eagles was relatively low. However, from 1997 to 1999, the series experienced remarkable year-over-year growth. The mintage surge of 309,829 coins in 1998 marked the series’ second-highest increase. Notably, the jump in demand from 1997 to 1998 was an impressive 201,024 coins. These coins debuted in 1986 and have been released annually ever since.
