In 2001, the United States Mint reintroduced one of its most cherished designs, which hadn’t been seen since 1936. To celebrate the Smithsonian Institutions National Museum of the American Indian, the US Mint released Proof and BU Buffalo Silver Dollars showcasing James Earle Frasers classic Buffalo Nickel imagery. Right now, you can find the 2001-D Buffalo Silver Dollar Coins at BGASC.

  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.

  • The obverse features a stoic indigenous figure.
  • On the reverse is an American bison.

These 2001-D Buffalo Silver Dollars are in near-perfect condition. Rated Mint State 69, they boast full, original mint luster with only up to two minor imperfections. These slight flaws, such as tiny contact marks or hairlines, must be located outside the coin’s primary focal points. The US Mint produced a total of 500,000 coins, with proof versions from the Philadelphia Mint and Brilliant Uncirculated coins from the Denver Mint. Each coin is made of 90% silver and 10% copper.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2001-D Buffalo Dollar Coin features James Earle Frasers design of a stoic indigenous figure. This image, created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel, shows the figure in right-profile relief and is said to be based on the combined facial features of three indigenous leaders from the early 20th century.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2001-D Buffalo Silver Dollars displays the American bison. Also designed by Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, this image shows the bison in left-profile relief on a small mound of land. The design was inspired by Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.

History

The 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar was released to honor the National Museum of the American Indian. Created by an Act of Congress in 1989, the NMAI has three locations. The NMAI houses one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of Native American artifacts, with approximately 825,000 items representing over 1,200 indigenous cultures from across the Americas.
