The Rooster is the tenth sign in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Those born in Rooster years are believed to be hardworking, punctual, and confident. The Perth Mint’s Lunar Series began in 1996 and has progressed to a third series as of 2020. Now, 2005 1/2 oz Australian Silver Lunar Rooster Coins are available online from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Coins arrive inside plastic capsules!
  • 7th coin in the Lunar Series I silver program!
  • Declared mintage of 37,994 coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2005 1/2 oz Silver Lunar Rooster features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile relief shows her wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, a design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. This portrait was widely used on Australian coins through 2018-2019.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2005 Australian Silver Lunar Rooster Coins depicts a rooster standing in left-profile relief, looking back over its shoulder. The scene includes a stylized flower and images of the sun and clouds in the background.

History

The Perth Mint launched its first Lunar Series in 1996, initially offering only gold coins. Lunar Series I ran until 2007, followed by Lunar Series II in 2008 and Lunar Series III in 2020. The silver coins were introduced in 1999, expanding the collection. In the Chinese calendar, the Rooster year is associated with the element of Metal. This combination is thought to bring strength, determination, and a practical approach to life. However, it can also lead to stubbornness and a tendency towards inflexibility.
