Obverse
The obverse of the 2008-W Proof First Spouse Van Burens Liberty Gold Coin features the iconic Seated Liberty design. As President Van Buren was a bachelor, this coin pays homage to him with the popular Liberty design of his era. Crafted by Christian Gobrecht, the Seated Liberty design adorned various silver denominations in the US currency.
Reverse
The reverse side of the coin showcases a young Martin Van Buren, seated by the trunk of a tree, engrossed in political writings. Van Buren’s family home served as a crucial center for political discussions during his formative years, eventually shaping his career in politics.
History
In 1839, the Spanish ship La Amistad, carrying African captives who had been illegally enslaved, was intercepted off the coast of Long Island, New York. The Africans revolted and took control of the ship. Van Buren’s administration faced the challenge of deciding the fate of the Africans. Eventually, the case reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where former President John Quincy Adams successfully argued for the Africans’ freedom. The court’s ruling in favor of the Africans was a significant moment in the fight against slavery.

In order to receive free shipping on purchases of $199 or more, you must live within the 50 US states. For orders less than $199, a $9.95 shipping fee applies.
