Obverse
The 2008-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Jacksons Liberty Gold Coin features the distinctive left-profile bust of Liberty by William Kneass on the obverse. Liberty dons a unique Phrygian cap, often referred to as the Capped Bust, and William Kneass, the 2nd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, is the brilliant mind behind this iconic design.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2008-W US Mint First Spouse Jacksons Liberty Gold Coin showcases a portrait of President Andrew Jackson on horseback. Known for his role as a beloved war hero, President Jackson holds the distinction of being the only President in US history to pay off the US federal debt.
History
In 1832, South Carolina, led by Vice President John C. Calhoun, challenged the federal government’s authority by attempting to nullify the Tariff of Abominations, which they viewed as unconstitutional and harmful to Southern interests. Jackson staunchly opposed nullification and threatened to use military force to enforce federal law. Ultimately, a compromise was reached to prevent an armed conflict, but the crisis highlighted the tensions between state and federal power during Jackson’s presidency.
