Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2009 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, you’ll find a regal depiction of Queen Elizabeth II, crafted by Susanna Blunt in 2003. This portrayal, without her crown, adds a contemporary flair to this classic coin.

Reverse

Meanwhile, the reverse of 2009 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins features the iconic sugar maple leaf, symbolizing Canada’s natural beauty and resilience.

History

The maple leaf began to be associated with Canada during the colonial period. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the maple leaf appeared on military insignia, crests, and badges of regiments associated with Canada within the British Empire. The maple leaf gained prominence as a national symbol during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was featured on the coat of arms of Ontario and Quebec, two of Canada’s founding provinces, and on the badge of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I.
