The Chinese Mint launched the Gold Panda series in 1982 with four initial weights, expanding in 1983 to add a fifth size, offering more options for collectors and investors. This series is well-loved for its annual design updates featuring the Giant Panda on the reverse, a unique approach that has since influenced other mints. BGASC now has 2009 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coins available.

Highlights:

  • Comes in a sealed plastic pouch!
  • 28th release in the Gold Panda Series!
  • Contains 1/20 Troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Assigned a face value of 20 Yuan by the government of China.
  • Obverse displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests.
  • Reverse showcases two Giant Panda cubs.

Each 2009 1/20 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin here comes in a sealed protective pouch. This 1/20 oz coin was part of the series from 1983 to 2015, with face values transitioning from 5 Yuan (1983-2000) to 20 Yuan (2001-2015). In 2016, the Chinese Mint restructured this coin to weigh 1 Gram instead of 1/20 oz.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2009 Chinese Gold Panda Coin is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, an iconic structure within the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. This sacred site holds great cultural significance in China.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2009 1/20 oz Gold Panda Coin features two Giant Panda cubs among bamboo. Using contrasting finishes, the design highlights the pandas black and white fur, bringing a lifelike quality to this peaceful nature scene.

History

The Giant Panda, although loved by many, remains classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Challenges such as habitat loss, deforestation, and bamboo shortages continue to threaten these gentle creatures, with only an estimated 1,800 pandas surviving in the wild. Conservation initiatives, like protected habitats, are essential in slowing the decline of panda populations.
