Obverse

The obverse of the 2010-W US Mint First Spouse Buchanans Liberty Gold Coin features Christian Gobrechts iconic portrayal of Lady Liberty, a design cherished from 1838 to 1907 on the US Eagle gold coin.

Reverse

Turn the 2010-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Buchanans Liberty Gold Coin, and the reverse unveils a seated James Buchanan at a desk, commemorating his presidency from 1857 to 1861 as the 15th President of the United States.

History

Buchanan’s presidency is often criticized for his inability to prevent the secession of Southern states from the Union. As states began to secede in response to Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860, Buchanan’s approach was perceived as indecisive. He argued that the federal government had no authority to prevent secession, contributing to the growing divide between the North and the South.
