After a five-year period of remarkable increases in mintage levels, the American Silver Eagle took a breather in 2012. Mintage had surged from 10.4 million coins in 2007 to a record-breaking 40.02 million in 2011. BGASC proudly presents the 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle, now available with a special commemorative box.

Highlights:

  • Comes securely packaged in a commemorative box with a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Represents the 26th striking of the Proof American Silver Eagle!
  • Limited mintage of 877,731 proof coins in 2012!
  • Contains 1 oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Issued a face value of $1 (USD) by the United States government.
  • Features the iconic Walking Liberty on the obverse.
  • The reverse showcases the heraldic eagle and bears the “W” mint mark, denoting its origin at the West Point Mint.

Each 2012-W 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coin offered here is packaged in a US Mint presentation box and secured in a capsule. The coins also come with a Certificate of Authenticity from the mint.

Obverse

The obverse showcases the timeless image of Walking Liberty, originally created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. This iconic design adorned the Walking Liberty Half Dollar until 1947, making it one of the longest-running coin designs in American history.

Reverse

On the reverse side, you’ll find John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design from 1986. Mercanti served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1986 until his retirement in 2010.

History

While the overall production of American Silver Eagles saw a slight dip in 2012, it was still notable. Following the record-setting 40 million coins in 2011, the US Mint recorded sales of 34.8 million American Silver Eagle coins in 2012. Such variations are expected after anniversary years, akin to the spike in 2006 following the 20th-anniversary celebration.

The standard 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle had a total mintage of 877,731, representing only a modest decrease. The primary drop occurred in the bullion coin category, falling from 40 million in 2011 to 33.7 million in 2012.
