{{/presale}}When it came to selecting images for the official gold bullion coin of the nation, the United States Mint opted for the most iconic figures. The obverse features Lady Liberty, symbolizing freedom and democracy, while the reverse showcases the American bald eagle, defender of freedom and a symbol of majesty. Now available from BGASC is the 2015 oz American Gold Eagle coin.
Highlights:
Each of the 2015 oz American Gold Eagle coins offered by BGASC comes with a protective plastic flip. These coins boast the highest mintage in the program since the 1999 release.
Obverse
On the obverse, you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty walking forward with her torch held aloft as a guiding light. The city of Washington DC is faintly visible at her feet, and the sun’s rays peek out from behind her figure.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features a depiction of a family of bald eagles. In this image, a male eagle returns to the nest where a female is guarding the hatchlings. Sculptor Miley Busiek created this image in 1986, and it is exclusively featured on the American Gold Eagle.
History
In 1986, the United States Mint selected Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic 1907 design of Lady Liberty to represent the nation on the American Gold Eagle coin. Saint-Gaudens, a renowned artist and sculptor, was personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign the nation’s gold and silver currency.
Saint-Gaudens’ design, initially featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, was the first coin redesigned during the government and US Mint initiative that spanned from 1905 to 1921. His Lady Liberty depiction is widely acclaimed as the greatest design in American coinage history.
