{{/presale}}This Brilliant Uncirculated Theodore Roosevelt National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin is the fourth of 2016 and the 34th overall in the America the Beautiful Coins Program. The reverse design of this silver bullion coin depicts a young Theodore Roosevelt on horseback surveying the terrain near the Little Missouri River. Inscriptions are “THEODORE ROOSEVELT,” “NORTH DAKOTA,” “2016” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The reverse was designed by AIP artist Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
When Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled man from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation. The rugged landscape and strenuous life that Roosevelt experienced would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today.
After becoming president in 1901, Roosevelt used his authority to protect wildlife and public lands by creating the United States Forest Service (USFS) and establishing 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments by enabling the 1906 American Antiquities Act. During his presidency,Theodore Roosevelt protected approximately 230 million acres of public land.
“We have fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever received, and each one must do his part if we wish to show that the nation is worthy of its good fortune.” – Theodore Roosevelt
