Obverse
The obverse of the 2021 American Gold Eagle Coin showcases Lady Liberty’s timeless design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originating in 1907, this design initially featured a ring of 46 stars, reflecting the number of US states at the time. Evolving with history, the stars increased to 50 by 1986, symbolizing the Union’s growth. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, and 2021.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2021 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle portrays a family of American bald eagles. A male eagle soars in flight carrying a branch, while a female shelters with a young hatchling in the nest. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.
History
Notably, the US Mint intends to introduce a new reverse design for these coins, phasing out the long-standing family of American bald eagles by mid-2021. However, the initial release of the 2021 American Gold Eagles continues with the existing design, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and the iconic family of bald eagles on the reverse.
