2021 Silver Krugerrand Highlights
History
The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint to help market South African gold. By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market. The name “Krugerrand” is a compound of “Kruger” (the man depicted on the obverse, the 5th President of the South African Republic) and “rand”, the South African unit of currency. In 2017, the South African Mint produced a 50th Year Anniversary Silver Krugerrand in two styles for collectors: Proof Strike in box with certificate of authenticity and “Premium Uncirculated”, both carrying a higher premium than typical bullion investment coins. 2018 marked the first year of issue for the Silver Krugerrand Bullion Strike Coin and made its debut at a price that is more familiar to investors of silver bullion coins produced by government mints.
Design
The obverse of the Krugerrand, depicting the effigy of Paul Kruger, was struck from the original die used in 1892 for the Kruger half-crown coin. The reverse was designed and engraved by Coert Steynberg, a famous South African sculptor, and depicts a prancing springbok, a national symbol.
South African Mint
The history of the South African Mint goes back to the opening of the first state mint in Pretoria in 1892. The current South African Mint came into being in 1941 when the South African government took over the Pretoria branch of the Royal Mint.
