Obverse
The obverse of the 2022 British Memorial Sovereign features King Charles III in a left-profile relief without a crown, a design by Martin Jennings. This is the first time a figure other than Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on a bullion version of the British Gold Sovereign. Inscriptions read MJ, CHARLES III, and DEI.GRA.REX.FID.DEF.
Reverse
The reverse of this 2022 Gold Memorial Sovereign showcases the Royal Arms of England, a design by Jody Clark. The Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland support a shield topped by a crown, which displays the coats of arms for England, Ireland, and Scotland. Inscriptions include JC, 2022, and DIEU ET MON DROIT.
History
The British Sovereign has a rich history dating back to 1817, originating from the Great Recoinage of 1816. While initially a circulation coin, these Sovereigns are now prized in the bullion market, with proof strikes also available. Similar to the American Gold Eagle, these coins are crafted from 22-karat gold.
