The coins are packaged in presentation boxes and include a Certificate of Authenticity. The Royal Mint limits the mintage of this coin to 23,160 in total, with only 17,500 gold coins in these presentation boxes.
Obverse
In the obverse design of the 2022 Proof British Memorial Sovereign Coin, you will find the first-ever portrait of the new king. Here, King Charles III is shown in left-profile relief without a crown on his head. Martin Jennings developed this portrait for the Royal Mint following Queen Elizabeth IIs death.
Reverse
For the reverse field of 2022 Proof Gold Memorial Sovereign Coins, the mint offers Jody Clarks vision of the Royal Arms. This design was created for the late Queens Platinum Jubilee and features on these memorial coins to honor her 70-year reign. The design includes the coat of arms of the United Kingdom with the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland.
History
Memorial Sovereigns temporarily abandon the use of Benedetto Pistruccis portrait of St. George slaying the dragon in order to honor Her Late Majesty. At the same time this coin honors the late Queen, it also marks the start of a new era with the debut of King Charles III.
