Obverse

On the obverse of the 2023 American Gold Eagle Coin is Lady Liberty. This front-facing depiction of Libertys full-length figure was created in 1907. It shows Liberty with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design includes sun rays in the background, the U.S. Capitol Building, and a ring of stars.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2023 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Coins comes with a depiction of the American bald eagle. This design from Jennie Norris was created in 2020 and made its debut in mid-2021. This left-profile effigy of the eagles head was created for the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Series in 2021.

History

American Gold Eagles debuted in 1986 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold BU coins. The same year saw 1 oz Proof Gold Eagles issued, followed by 1/2 oz gold in 1987 and 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz in 1988. The Burnished Gold Eagle was originally available in these four weights from 2006 to 2008, but only comes in 1 oz gold as of 2011.
