Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 1/4 oz British Britannia Coin showcases the inaugural coinage portrait of King Charles III. This groundbreaking design by Martin Jennings presents His Majesty in left-profile relief, notably without the traditional crown. Inscriptions read CHARLES III, D.G.REX.F.D, 25 POUNDS, and MJ.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2023 British Gold Britannia Coin, the timeless figure of Britannia continues to stand guard. This enduring design by Philip Nathan depicts Britannia atop a mound, her gaze fixed towards the horizon. She stands resplendent in a Corinthian helmet, brandishing a trident in one hand and the Union Jack shield in the other, embodying the strength and vigilance of the British nation. Inscriptions include BRITANNIA, 2023, 1/4 OZ, and 999.9 FINE GOLD.
History
The year 2023 marks the end of an era and the beginning of another for the British Gold Britannia. From its inception in 1987 until 2022, these coins bore the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Now, with the ascension of King Charles III to the throne after the longest wait of any heir apparent in British history, his portrait graces select 2023 issues. In a notable departure from his mother’s right-facing crowned effigy, King Charles III is portrayed in left-profile relief without a crown.
